The notion that we’re paying for high-quality water with vital trace elements when purchasing expensive mineral water is a widespread misconception. As the Stiftung Warentest (German consumer organization) found in a comprehensive study, purchased mineral water rarely contains more minerals than tap water. On the contrary, it often contains more contaminants. A study by the University of Frankfurt also found that mineral water from plastic bottles is contaminated with hormonally active substances. Our drinking water is the most controlled food in Germany. The protection provisions for water are regulated by the Drinking Water Ordinance. More than 50 microbiological, chemical, and physical parameters are defined and controlled. These guidelines are even stricter than those for spring and mineral water and stipulate that drinking water must not contain pathogens or other substances in concentrations harmful to health. Although healthy drinking water is available to private households and businesses at all times, for which they usually already pay, time and money are still invested in the purchase, delivery, and storage of water bottles. Multinational corporations purchase cheap sources in sometimes distant countries. The cheap water, usually bottled in disposable plastic bottles, is then sent on an enormously long journey to Germany and other countries to be sold as expensive mineral water. A very lucrative business that affects both indigenous populations living in poverty and the environment. Since 2010, water has been recognized as a human right. Nevertheless, around 2.2 billion people worldwide still lack access to clean water, of which approximately 785 million people do not even have basic access to drinking water. The important aspect of environmental pollution has not yet been addressed.

Especially for companies with a workforce of already 8-10 people, the cost comparison between a water dispenser and water bottles shows significant cost savings. Example calculation: In our example, we assume 230 working days per year and a water consumption of one liter per employee. The average price per liter for tap water in Germany is 0.2 cents. For drinking water from glass bottles, we assume a price of 60 cents per liter. (Average information) Companies with 10 employees: €46* for a water dispenser with a fixed water connection €1380 for drinking water from glass bottles Companies with 50 employees: €230* for a water dispenser with a fixed water connection €6,900 for drinking water from glass bottles.

*Costs for table water, rental costs of the water dispenser not included

We don’t aim to be the cheapest or the largest provider, but the most sustainable one! All our WIR machines are manufactured in Europe. Our maintenance intervals are shorter, and the filters we use are of higher quality. Moreover, 10% of the rental price of each WIR water machine goes directly to the Water Is Right Foundation without deductions. With every liter of water consumed from our WIR machines, we finance 10 liters of water where it is needed. Over the next 10 years, Water Is Right aims to provide clean drinking water and sanitation facilities to 100 million people.

The difference lies in the ingredients. Mineral water contains large amounts of minerals, including calcium, magnesium, iron, and sodium – a very marketable argument. However, it’s not mentioned that these minerals cannot be fully processed by the human body, and the mineral requirements are already adequately covered by our food intake. What about plastic bottles (PET bottles)? There are now a large number of studies examining whether plastic bottles contain plasticizers and thus hormone-like substances. However, one fact stands out. The concentration of these substances appears to be higher in PET bottles than in tap water. Researchers at the University of Frankfurt were able to detect a substance (comparable to the female hormone estrogen) in water from PET bottles in 12 out of 20 samples. One cause of the pollutants in water from PET bottles could be the plasticizers (BPA) contained in the plastic. There is evidence that these substances could slowly dissolve from the plastic and enter the water. Our high-quality water filters have been specially developed for applications where bacteria-free water quality is required. Membrane and carbon block technologies are combined in these multi-stage filters, which lead to the reduction of organic “TOC” (total organic carbon) as well as the removal of chlorine and other odors and flavors – while trace elements and minerals of the water are retained in an ideal composition. The activated carbon block pre-filter reduces dirt and particles for premium filtration results up to a size of 0.15 μm. The capillary membrane filtration reduces 99.9999% of bacteria, asbestos fibers, and cysts such as Cryptosporidium and Giardia.

All that is needed for the installation of WIR water dispensers is a suitable location, one to two power outlets, and a water connection. Of course, our service team checks all parameters in advance and is also responsible for the professional installation and commissioning of the water dispensers.

This concept embeds sustainable water supply in communities by relying on the training of local professionals who can autonomously operate water treatment and management systems. By avoiding unnecessary transportation and reducing dependence on external parties, the ‘Culture of Maintenance’ promotes a lasting, self-determined improvement of water infrastructure in disadvantaged areas.
